Just bought 580exII speedlite external flash - help? - direct camera flash
As a hobby photographer, I have the Canon XTI. I bought an external flash, but do not really know anything. I tried to read the book, but do not get much. I know, but obviously not work, and the pop-up flash unit. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? I photographed a few weddings to go, and want to get the right lighting. External flash is really far just for photos? Is there a web site will be directed to me, for a basic tutorial on external flash? Thank you very much!

External flash to prevent red-eye and offers better performance than the flash of the camera.

Here is everything you want about the use of Canon flash. It's a long article, but learn written in the language and a lot if you take the time to learn.

Now I can tell you a few things you can not know. What follows is for the Canon, which does not necessarily make as other work.
I do not recommend using the camera in AUTO mode when the flash-580. In this mode, the light source as the main flash will be used. The camera configuration is exclusively on the handle to the main theme is based lighting. This leads to a very light ameteurish hard for a dark background.
You will get better results when using the flash to fill in as light sources. This is both in the "a" mode of aperture priority, or "TV" time value (shutter) priority done mode.
You have to be careful about using. If you are in "A", the camera chooses a shutter speed of the ambient lig GameThing. This can result in slow shutter speed, even with the flash type, a blurred image. The mode is well suited for use in outdoor situations where you do not have a shutter speed get too low. The flash will fill the shadows.
"TV" mode is good for the inside, like at weddings. You can set a shutter speed of 1 / 40 and the camera takes a hole to match the ambient light. Again, the flash is being used more as a fill-light instead of a single lamp. You can get a good shot, where you can see the whole room lit with natural light into the object by the lightning.
A flash diffuser can significantly contribute to the appearance of your photos. I use a Gary Fong Lightsphere here:

I use the clear pattern with the white dome on the site at any time.
If you use the flash, white balance for flash (the small icon of Lightning Bolt).
You may need to increase the level of commitment in the Flash. I am sure if you Lightsphere. I raise myLevel 1 This allows more light to compensate for that lost in the region.
ETTL media evaluation by the determination of the target. This is where the flash will be displayed in the rule. The flash output is "supposed" to be based on the measurement through the lens during the exposure, which have never been fully convinced that it works perfectly always. Certain conditions can be excluded, but usually always the flash in ETTL, and increase or decrease the EV setting on the flash-based test plans.
The ISO can make a big difference in the flash range. They can even double your flash range by simply increasing the ISO-100-400. I always place my ISO to 400 for every time I use my flash, and Lightsphere 580th
He said he will make a few marriages. It is a very different, but I'll give you a few things quickly, so that you do this, mainly because it is the first time.
Test, test, test. To go to church / place before marriage and if you can do a lot of test shots. Play with your camera and flash, then During of weddiing.
I hope that the couple does not know them, so done before marriage. It is not easy. You need to know your camera back and forth and know what adjustments to be changed, when and how you need it immediately.
I weddings on a regular basis. There is much more what is believed involved ... at least do well. Here is my website. Most of these photographs were taken with my Canon 1Ds Mark II, with 580 EX flash, Lightsphere, ISO 400, shutter priority at 1 / 40 to 1 EV Flash. I think you will see that these plans are much better than the strokes of flash types.

The user manual for your camera Flash should use a section called "have". We show you how your machine for best results. (Probably in Aperture Preferred).
Check the manual flash section A in use "Auto".
What we want is for the camera and working together to circuitry of the system E-TTL II controls for the flash, the flash duration. This allows greater flexibility when choosing their flash metering diaphragms, as they put the sensor.
I'm a fan of media camera flash OFF after using a since 1976. You can contribute to the review of the Canon Speedlite Bracket SB-E2.
Historical note:
TTL Minolta invented and patented in 1981 and led the X-700 SLR and the "PX" series of flash drives.
Normally, when you make the camera flash stick, and everything is fine, nice shots.
Need to know what exactly the problem.

I 430EX. Shot in manual mode, and I 2 / 3 FEC to obtain good exposure. Probably FEC must be set to 1 or more if you take the picture with the bride in a white dress.
